1. A jet-like stream effect has been noticed to occur at the bladder neck in some patients during the injection of the contrast medium for retrograde urethrography. This phenomenon is termed the "urethrovesical stream effect."

2. Clinical and experimental evidence is presented to show that the urethrovesical stream effect is a sign of bladder neck contraction.

3. This urethrographic sign is, therefore, offered as an aid to the preoperative diagnosis of bladder neck contraction.
