AN ANALYSIS OF THE NORMAL ANATOMIC RELATIONSHIPS OF THE COLON AS APPLIED TO ROENTGENOGRAPHIC OBSERVATIONS

JOSEPH P. WHALEN M.D.1 and PAUL A. RIEMENSCHNEIDER M.D.2

1 Formerly, Instructor in Radiology, Albany Medical Center Hospital, Albany, New York
2 Formerly, Professor and Chairman, Department of Radiology, State University of New York Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, New York

In summary, the anatomic relationships and predicted displacements of portions of the colon have been described. Exception has been taken to the identification roentgenographically of the so-called splenic flexure. On the basis of the anatomic relationships, an explanation of the usual displacement patterns of the colon by extracolic masses has been given.
