A HAZARD OF SILICONE FOAM DIAGNOSTIC ENEMA

REPORT OF A CASE OF PERFORATION OF THE COLON

JOHN R. AMBERG M.D.1

1 From the Department of Radiology of the University of California School of Medicine and the Veterans Administration Hospital, San Francisco, California

A fatality associated with the use of a silicone foam diagnostic enema in a patient with a radiation stricture is reported.

[See figure in the pdf file]

Although limitation of the enema would be expected to minimize this complication, this method of diagnosis in a radiation-injured colon is definitely contraindicated.
