PRESERVATION OF THE LARYNX IN THE SURGICAL TREATMENT OF CANCER, RECURRENT AFTER RADIATION THERAPY

Ten cases of cancer in or about the larynx, recurrent after irradiation, in whom limited surgical procedures have been done were observed. In 7 of these patients, the initial cancer WaS in the true cord region. The results in these patients have been encouraging to date. In 2 of the other patients, the cancer was in the base of the tongue, and in 1, on the arytenoid and aryepiglottic fold. It is too soon to determine whether a limited procedure will be a satisfactory method of managing recurrences after irradiation in these areas. However, it has been demonstrated that voice and swallowing functions can be satisfactorily restored.
